Spanish Flu, or “La Grippe”, was one of the most devastating epidemics in recorded history – especially given the short amount of time it spanned. Just as World War I was ending and peace was in sight, a dreadful influenza pandemic was raising its ugly head. Estimates place the death toll somewhere between 50 and 100 million people across the world. By 1918, vaccines against smallpox, typhoid fever and rabies had already been developed, but attempts at an influenza vaccine had not been effective.
